Story

New Mexico’s Bisti Wilderness enshrouds itself with an entirely different character as the sun slips below the horizon. What were endless hoodoos stretching for miles becomes only the hoodoos a few feet away from you. Darkness claims the rest. But with stars lighting our way, Bisti Deep showcases the mysteries of the desert night.

The arch of the Milky Way provides perspective to the scene and shows us just how deep the view actually is. A path leads in, picks us up, and takes us ever deeper into the wilderness. It might appear snowy at first, but in truth it’s just white rock, and the night is playing tricks on our eyes.

Barnard’s Loop is faintly visible in the upper right, lending yet another mystery to the scene. And if that’s not enough, airglow provides a counterpoint of colors.

Overall, I really adore the layered complexity of a seemingly simple scene. The more you look, the more you reveal. Bisti Deep is one of my favorite night photographs. It’s easy to get lost in both the wilderness and the photograph, creating an endless adventure.
