Twilight Crescent

A crescent moon rises in the New Mexico skies. A simple, yet powerful image, of our moon.

Story

Every day we bear witness to the daylight slipping away into the darkness of night. The transition is always subtle and smooth, and occasionally, we barely even notice it happening. But we are not alone in this transition. The moon also makes transitions, going from a new moon to a full moon and back again. Combining all these transitions into a single photograph gives us Twilight Crescent.

Twilight Crescent showcases the moon when it is precisely 23% illuminated in a cloudless sky right at sunset. The darkness of the night sky is right behind the moon, while the brightness of the daylight is still ahead of it. The moon hangs in the balance of both, one side dark and invisible and the other bright and observable.

This photograph, simple on one hand, and exceptionally compelling on the other, reminds us that transitions happen every day, whether we directly observe them or not. The day slips into the night and then back again. The moon’s phase changes every day in its never-ending cycle, even if we can’t always see it that particular day.

Twilight Crescent represents perfectly the balance of change and the beauty it represents.
