Dancing Aspens

Story

Colorado is known for so many things—its abundance of 14,000+ mountains, its strong outdoor culture, and, of course, its aspens. In the fall, glowing aspens cover the mountainsides, with leaves dancing in the gentlest of all breezes. But aside from the sweeping mountain views, there are intimate aspen scenes, too. Dancing Aspens is one of those.

Typically, aspens grow straight and tall, reaching skyward to touch the sun. But very rarely, their trunks bend and curve. While seeing a single curved aspen isn’t out of the ordinary, what makes this group near Ophir so unusual is the way they move in unison—an entire grove sharing the same rhythmic, sweeping bend.

For a long time, the origin of this curve was a mystery to me, along with everyone else. I had heard many theories. Some suggested that shepherds from a bygone era had marked the trees. Most people dismiss it as a random natural phenomenon.

However, recent conversations with three expert foresters have provided an unexpected and fascinating answer. It turns out the secret lies beneath the surface. A hard, underlying substrate, likely a buried rock or dense geological impediment, forces the root systems to navigate around an obstacle.

As the roots are forced to deviate from their vertical path, the trunks must follow, creating that characteristic, graceful arc. We’re seeing nature adapt to the terrain, and its solution provides both resilience and beauty. And Dancing Aspens, too!

Now that I know the ‘how,’ that doesn’t diminish the magic; it only adds to it. Whether caused by ancient shepherds or geological necessity, this group of Dancing Aspens remains one of my favorite encounters in the high country.
