Story

Colorado is known for so many things—its abundance of 14,000+ mountains, its strong outdoor culture, and, of course, its aspens. In the fall, glowing aspens cover the the mountainsides, with leaves dancing in the gentlest of all breezes. But aside from the sweeping mountain views, there are intimate aspen scenes, too. Dancing Aspens is one of those.

Typically, aspens grow straight and tall, reaching skyward to touch the sun. But sometimes, for whatever reason, their trunks bend and curve. Curved aspens are uncommon, but seeing one here and there isn’t out of the ordinary. What is unusual here, though, is an entire grouping of aspens with a similar curve.

It is a mystery why there is a curve. Some suggest that shepherds in days gone by made their mark or left a signal. Others say that it is just a natural phenomenon, and nothing special is going on. Regardless of the origin, though, Dancing Aspens makes a charming and delightful scene.

Having spent some time exploring this area, though, there are many curved trunks. To me, this suggests a more natural origin. But, you just never know! This group, near Ophir, is certainly one of my favorites.
