Story

Time, as always, marches forever onward. Relentless, it improves some things, but leaves others behind, forgotten and abandoned. The ghost town of Alta, Colorado, long uninhabited, is just one of these places. Alta View reminds us of what it must have been like.

Alta was a mining town, as so many towns in Colorado were in the late 1800s. Miners dug gold, silver, lead, and copper out of the hillside. Alta followed the path most of its brethren did. It rapidly expanded to support the mines, flourish, then fade away into obscurity. What made Alta unique, though, was its connection to electricity.

Instead of powering its mill through wood or coal, it tapped into the nearby A/C power plant at Ames built by George Westinghouse. Alas, not even electricity could save Alta as the ores played out. The mines closed, and Alta faded away.

Today, Alta View gives us a glimpse of what it might have been like there. The old, completely dilapidated old cabin still has a stunning view of cloud-wrapped Mount Wilson. It’s certainly not safe to be inside the cabin, but we can stand outside it, and recreate what it was like all those decades ago. The ore, and the town, are gone, but the memories live on for us.
