Story

Once in a while you happen across a scene that, while it is in the here and now, could be at any time, and sometimes, even at any place. Timeless Crossing is one of those very scenes.

Deep in the heart of Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountain National Park, tucked down a long-forgotten road off another road that seems forgotten, is this bridge. A sturdy chain prevents me from crossing the bridge, but that’s OK. I would have liked to explore on the other side of it. But I was, also, quite content on the river bank, for it presents us with this timeless view.

The day was rainy, as many days here are, but that just enhanced the mood. The drab grey skies worked perfectly to set the overall tone, which, despite the grey, still gives a warm feeling. The peak autumn colors glowed in the rain. And even the bridge itself looked spectacular when wet.

Where does the bridge go? I have no idea, and probably never will. Some mysteries, however, don’t need to be answered, and the question, although lingering, doesn’t bother me in the least. It’s a timeless crossing on a beautiful fall day, and truly, that’s good enough.
