Story

The feeling I have when my toes are over the edge of a cliff looking at the vastness before me is overwhelming. It’s hard, if not impossible, to fully comprehend how far I can see. As the sense of scale settles in, realize the details I can’t see. Canyon Storm drives this point home.

Made at the South Rim of Arizona’s Grand Canyon National Park, Canyon Storm depicts an isolated thunderstorm cell, lightning included, as it drifts down the canyon during the summer monsoon season. The canyon is so big and so deep that it generates its weather. This weather operates according to the rules of the canyon and not the surrounding countryside.

Brief, fierce storms are common in the summer. Torrential downpours are the norm, but the storms pass quickly, leaving a sunny afternoon in their wake.

This photograph was made while I was standing in one of those downpours. The storm was swirling all around me, which provided the best colors. Wet rocks and landscape appear so different, and so vibrant, than when it is dry. There was nothing for it but to embrace the rain to create Canyon Storm.

And sure enough, the thunderstorm dissipated before I knew it, leaving only this memory.
