Story

When we think of the word “waterfall,” we often think of mighty falls with an incredible amount of water flowing. In our minds we can hear the roar and thunder of it from far away, and we stand in awe before it. Yet, small waterfalls are frequently just as awe-inspiring, if not more so. Such is the case of Meigs Falls and this beautiful scene: Secret Fall.

Meigs Falls is in Great Smoky Mountain National Park on the Tennessee side. It’s a small fall, tucked back and out of the way, and easily missed. In fact, if you don’t know what to look for, you’ll likely zoom by it, never knowing it was there. But, for those who know, it presents an iconic scene.

Framed by the perfect amount of fall color, Secret Fall is a classic view. The water tumbles over a rock and into a stream, creating the perfect moment. I photographed while it was raining, which helped bring out the fabulous color of the leaves. Everything, including myself, was soaking wet. There is no better time to photograph fall colors, though.

Secret Fall is not to be missed, and reminds us to pay attention to the small, out-of-the-way places.
