Pocket’s Tree

A lone pine tree grows among the fractured white sandstone in White Pocket. Pocket’s Tree celebrates this plucky tree.

Story

White Pocket, located deep inside the heart of Arizona’s Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, is like no other place. Noted for its fantastical and improbably colorful rock formations, it is a fairyland of opportunity. Yet, it also has deeply poignant scenes, such as Pocket’s Tree, that present a compelling story.

This lone pine tree, tucked into an out-of-the-way corner of White Pocket, is one of those stories. There are no other trees there, and in fact, hardly any vegetation. The rock is inhospitable to life. Yet, against all odds, a single seed found purchase took root. And, over the years, the seedling turned into a tree and miraculously grew into Pocket’s Tree.

This view, for me, represents the eternal struggle life faces and succeeds in. It isn’t the tallest pine tree in the world but is the mightiest in this milieu. The tree stands tall, surrounded by waves of lined rock, backed by storm clouds of imminent foul weather.

Also, this photograph reminds me that we all need to stand tall and thrive where we are.

A Fun Fact

You are welcome to travel to White Pocket whenever you’d like. But, be warned, the drive there is as difficult as they come. The road, such as it is, is pure sand, and if you are not truly prepared to drive in sand, you are going to learn some hard lessons.

There are several guide companies that will take you there. And interestingly, the guides know and love this tree! They always make sure to water the tree to make sure it remains healthy.
