Story

The fact that the most absolutely outstanding things tuck themselves in out of the way places always amazes me, if only one knows where to look. Dark Spire is a perfect example of this phenomenon.

This tall, singular spire of dark rock is found in Utah’s Lower Blue Hills, which is in turn located in the middle of the state between, well, nowhere and nowhere. The colorless, nearly featureless desert stretches as far as the eye can see to forever, it seems. But off a dirt track, and then down a completely featureless canyon lies Dark Spire, a destination you have to know to find.

However, despite the stunning landscape here, I wanted to showcase the spire in a different light. Or perhaps more accurately, no light at all. I chose a clear moonless night when the darkness would be absolute. Journeying to the spire before nightfall, I made it there as the sun was setting. I set up and waited for the sun to dip below the horizon.

It was eerie standing still waiting for darkness. The faint sounds of the desert faded with the sun, and at just the right moment, I made Dark Spire. It’s a reminder of the incredible sights the desert holds for us.

As a side note, people often call this spire Long Dong Silver.  It doesn’t appear to have any formal name, so we’ll go with that.
