Story

The rare double rainbow over Alien Throne felt like a moment of perfection. Standing in the Navajo Nation’s Valley of Dreams in New Mexico, watching the light arc over the iconic hoodoo, I knew I made a timeless photograph.

I was wrong.

The same once-in-a-century storm that created the rainbow also brought the end. Just after I made this photograph, violent weather descended on the desert. The storm turned the landscape into an impassable morass of mud and water. In that deluge, the throne finally succumbed to the same forces that had sculpted it for millennia. It collapsed into a pile of rubble.

I wasn’t there to witness the fall. But this is one of, if not the, last photographs of this magnificent hoodoo. Alien Rainbow is no longer just a photograph; it is a requiem. It is the final glimpse of an icon now lost to the desert and a powerful reminder that the desert is constantly remodeling itself.
