Steam Symphony
Steam Symphony showcases steam engines #476 and #473 from the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Furthermore, the cars have the iconic livery of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad.
Story
In the late 1800’s, the steam engine ruled the day. In the mountains of Colorado and beyond, the mighty steam engines of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad were workhorses. These narrow-gauge engines moved freight and passengers quickly and efficiently. Sometimes, though, steep mountain grades required more than one steam engine. Steam Symphony exemplifies such a train.
Engines #473 and #476 work together to guide heavy freight and passenger carriages along the rails. In this case, the train departed Durango, Colorado, en route to Silverton, which is uphill the entire way. As they rounded a corner in a valley, smoke billowed from their stacks on a pristine fall day, creating this marvelous photograph.
Additionally, behind the scenes, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad recreated this historically accurate mid-train helper. It’s the first time in seventy years that the line has seen such a configuration. It is fitting that they used the iconic K28 engines.
Still, the mighty steam symphony continues, its iron heart filled with life as it traverses the rails.
