Great Gallery
The Great Gallery in Canyonlands National Park.
Special note: This piece is a unique size and is offered here at 12″x60″ in finished aluminum only. Due to the singular, expansive aspect ratio of this photograph, traditional framing presentations may not possible. This format was chosen specifically to preserve the continuous, haunting narrative of the “Holy Ghost” and its attendant figures without visual interruption. Please contact me if you have specific requirements.
This piece is $940.00. The piece will arrive in a sturdy crate to protect it during transit.
Story
Horseshoe Canyon’s Great Gallery is one of, if not the most significant prehistoric rock art panels in the Colorado Plateau, or perhaps all the Southwest. Horseshoe Canyon is a remote, difficult to reach, unit of Canyonlands National Park in Utah. Despite the difficulty in getting there, many people visit it.
The entire panel stretches almost two hundred feet, and life-sized figures cover it. Some figures are even taller, and reach six feet high. The far-left side features the “Holy Ghost” portion, which is eerie and haunting. Upon closer inspection, you realize that the central Holy Ghost is in a three-quarters view, a rarity in rock art. And it may be the only such example of this view.
Artists painted and pecked the figures into the canyon wall in the Barrier Canyon Style. And, archeologists consider the entire Great Gallery panel the archetype of Barrier Canyon Style. Although artists superimposed other styles over Barrier Canyon art, Barrier Canyon artists did not cover other styles. Archaeologists consider this some of the oldest rock art in the Southwestern United States.
The Great Gallery lives on from the past into today’s world.
The Immersive Experience
Standing before the Great Gallery, the sheer horizontal scale of the rock art becomes overwhelming, demanding a perspective that encompasses the entire six-foot height of these ancient figures. I carefully created this 12″x60″ panorama specifically to honor that expanse, preserving every nuance of the ochre pigments and desert varnish.
The Panoramic Narrative
This presentation is more than a photograph; it is a curated window into the profound past of the Colorado Plateau. This exclusive ultra-wide format creates a modern focal point that invites you to walk alongside the panel. This immersive experience honors the original Barrier Canyon artists’ likely intent to engage with the full body of the work.
The piece allows the “Holy Ghost” and its surrounding figures to float within your space just as they have within the canyon for millennia.
This is an opportunity to bring home a highly detailed piece of the Southwest’s history. Its presentation respects the unique architectural aspect of a panel that spans nearly two hundred feet of living history.
The Holy Ghost
The Holy Ghost is available as a separate photograph. This piece has more options available, since it does not show all of the Great Gallery.
