Classic Watchman

Story

The Watchman, a tall sandstone mountain, stands guard over the south entrance of Utah’s Zion National Park. Ever faithful in its duties, it greets visitors as they flow into the park. This view, Classic Watchman, is one of the iconic scenes of the Southwest.

Zion National Park is one of the scenic wonders of the world. Everywhere you turn, there are sweeping landscapes, sheer sandstone canyon walls, and intimate views, each more astonishing. It is almost sensory overload, and it is easy to be overwhelmed. You can spend forever in the park and still not experience all there is to see.

Moreover, I’ve spent countless hours in the park, exploring nooks and crannies. I’ve photographed its mountains, trekked through its backcountry, and delved into its lesser-known areas while searching for the ultimate consummate photograph.

But sometimes, it’s best to return to the time-honored viewpoints. With the Virgin River flowing toward the Watchman and a delightful fall day, everything comes together to create Classic Watchman.
