The Grand Canyon, in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, is world-renowned for its spectacular beauty.  People come from all over the globe to peer into its abyss, and marvel and at what the forces of nature can create, given enough time. As the day breaks, the people come, touring all along the canyon’s rim. As daylight begins to fade, many people gather at the edge of the rim and watch in hushed reverence as the canyon puts on a sunset light show that has few rivals. After sunset, everyone heads off for their evening activities and the canyon comes quietly to rest for the night.

A short time after sunset, however, the canyon will put on another show, although this time there are few there to witness it. As true dark steals the last vestiges of light, the stars above come out, shining brightly through the clear desert air. When the time of the year is right, the Milky Way rises over the canyon as well. Despite the early crowds that share in the day’s delights, this show always feel far more intimate, as if it was put on for just yourself, and indeed, that is often the case. As the night grows longer the Milky Way soars higher over the canyon, leaving the three thousand foot walls behind, and eventually daylight pushes stars and night aside. The canyon fills with people once again, all none the wiser to the show that just ended.
