The Grand Canyon, in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, is truly one of the world’s wonders. Over countless years, the erosional forces, along with the powerful Colorado River, have torn away the canyon’s walls. The attack has been two-fold: the Colorado River cuts down through the layers of the rock, going deeper and deeper, until, in some spots, it has gone as low as it can possibly go. The spring rains and floods load the river with rocks large and small, each of which acts as a hammer, allowing the river to continue carving and carrying away the debris. Meanwhile, side tributaries find their way to the Colorado, each one of which exacts a toll on the canyon walls and making impressive side canyons. Together, they opened up the canyon, pebble by pebble, revealing layers of rock going back to the very beginning of our plant.

All that is lost on us once the sun begins to set. The tortured landscape lights up into millions of colors and hues; each butte glows its own color, each face reflects the waning sun’s rays slightly different, and all the classic colors of the desert are on display for a short while.
Eventually, long shadows creep over the canyon, bathing it in darkness, and letting it rest so it can show its finery again the next day.
