Welcoming Santuario

The legends hold he was healed by faith alone, through the vehicle of the sacred dirt. Free from sickness, free from disease, free from the ailments that held him back, he stood straight and walked tall as only the righteous walk. At El Santuario de Chimayo, nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico, the legends may not be legends at all, and instead may well be fact and miracle.

Sometime around 1814 or so Fernando Abeyta built a small chapel, and no sooner had it been built than testimonies of cures began pouring in. To this day, visitors to the chapel are free to take a small amount of holy dirt to effect their own cures. As to the veracity of the miracles, the Church is silent on the subject, taking no position. In any event, this serene sanctuary stands today as a testament to those who believe; past, present, and future.
