The Narrows is a section of the Virgin River in Zion National Park, Utah. What makes this area so unique is the river flowing through the tall canyon walls with very little, if any, shoreline.

The walls soar over one thousand feet above the river, straight and sheer, narrowing and condensing the normally docile river. The swift narrows can become a raging, and extremely dangerous, inescapable torrent during high river flows, and even worse during a flash flood. Luckily, flash floods are not very common, but when they happen, watch out!

In the morning the sun reflects off the sandstone walls, lighting them up and providing a warm counterpoint to the cool blue tones of the river. The dramatic scene is a high point and a destination of many who walk up the river, and with good reason.

Photographed here in the early spring when the run-off was high the rover bottom is nowhere to be seen. That’s OK, though, because it highlights the power of the swift narrows.
