Malpais Bluffs

Sandstone, given the right conditions, takes on a life of its own, and when that happens it is a sight you don’t want to miss.

These sandstone bluffs, well over 200 feet tall, are located in the El Malpais National Monument in New Mexico. Standing tall and mighty over the valley below, the bluffs are a pale color throughout most of the day. This is not to say that they are not beautiful even then, for they are, but their beauty is significantly magnified when the sun hits them perfectly.

These bluffs not only reflect light, but they also seem to hold onto it as well, giving off deep, rich, and seemingly unreal colors. When the skies above them wander into the pinks and purples, as the Southwest skies sometimes do, they echo and reflect those colors, and add in a few of their own, too.

The result becomes scenes like this one, which exemplifies the ever-changing and out of the way beauty that New Mexico has to offer.
