The Colorado River flows for over fourteen hundred miles across the Southwestern United States and into Mexico. Along the way it twists and turns, and takes on a myriad of different personalities. In some areas, it is gentle, bringing life-giving water to all who gather on its shores. In others, it is angry and temperamental, presenting harrowing rapids to those who dare to travel on it. And in others, it twists and turns as it meanders on its way.

In the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, just outside of Page, Arizona, it takes one particularly interesting meander called Horseshoe Bend. Not only is the meander itself interesting, as the river flows in an almost complete circle, but it does so with one thousand foot walls of sandstone.

This view is one of my favorites. With the sun rising just behind me, I loved how the distant cliffs began to glow with the colors of the morning, with the morning pinks merging into the purples of the clouds. The blue of the river contrasted wonderfully with the sandstone, and the vibrant green provided the perfect counterpoint. The river flowed through Horseshoe Bend and on its way, leaving this lasting image for us to enjoy.
