Horse Encounter

There I was, in Monument Valley, located in the Navajo Nation, peacefully minding my own business. It was a very beautiful day, overall, and I had been scouting the area around Rain God Mesa to make a landscape photograph. I am completely enchanted by the valley, and spend quite a bit of time there. Although I know the valley very well, I still find different views and scenes every time I go. I have found that it is best to be patient, go slowly, taking everything in, before settling in a location.

To this end I had been meandering around the mesas there. I was being quiet, as I usually am, concentrating carefully on where I wanted to make my photograph, and had it narrowed down to one of two places. Perfect. What I failed to notice was the hoofbeats off in the distance.

At some point I became aware of the fact that I was most definitely not alone anymore, as the sound of hoofs, and the horses attached to them, grabbed my attention, and grew louder.

Before I realized it, the herd of horses thundered on by me, an intensity in their eyes that said they knew right where they were going, and they were in a hurry to get there. What an awesome horse encounter!
