The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, which runs between the cities of Durango and Silverton, Colorado, generally follows the course of the Animas River. The tracks, which usually run next to the river, wend through mountain passes in harmony with the river. In a few sections, however, the engineers who built the railroad had to be a lot more creative.

The High Line is an area of the railroad that is marked by steep drop offs along cliff edges; at the end of the High Line is High Bridge, which is the railroad’s highest span. Originally built in the 1880s, and installed in this location in 1894, the bridge is a classic railroad bridge.

When the train approaches, then crosses, the bridge presents some of most incredible photographic opportunities imaginable. As the train comes onto the bridge and begins the southbound descent down the High Line, it might brake a bit, providing that extra photographic flare.

All in all, the DS&NG Railroad still operates today, just as it did one hundred years ago, giving us the ability to step back into the past, and relive experiences such as High Bridge.
