Guadalupe’s Colors

Guadalupe Mountains National Park, in far western Texas, is a jewel hiding in plain sight. Although far from a secret, it doesn’t attract nearly the crowds that other National Parks do, which is a shame. Located in the desert climate, perhaps visitors don’t expect the park to be as colorful as it is.

To be fair, not all of the park shares in this riot of color. Parts of the park are barren and dry, a true desert ecosystem. Along its small rivers and arroyos, however, the trees have decided to hold their own against any other park in the entire system.

This scene always makes me smile. I adore the full range of fall color represented. Yellows, oranges and reds dominate the photograph, but the hint of green and the few trees that have already dropped their leaves, to me, shows the full range that autumn has to offer.

For me, it is a good thing that the park is not crowded. I love its leisurely feel and pace, and when I am there, it feels like the park is mine and mine alone. There is no better feeling in the world.
