Southern Utah, in general, is known for its outstanding landscapes. Scenes of twisted rock are common there, although each scene is unique in its own right. Factory Butte, however, is in a league of its own.

What makes this lone butte so spectacular is that it is just that: a lone butte. The surrounding landscape is as flat as can possibly be. Rising up from the flatness is the butte, tall and imposing, making it an unmistakable landmark for miles around. Rising through different geologic layers, the butte takes on a multi-colored appearance.

Like much of this area, coal was mined around Factory Butte, although those mines have long played out. For a while, though, mining was an important part of the local economy. Today, the empty mines can be found if you know where to look in the badlands, as are a few relics of that time past.

In the meantime, Factory Butte stands tall and proud against the contrast of the desert, presenting its played geology and mining past for all to see.
