Bluebird Dad

The flash of blue is fleeting, at least most of the time it is. You think to yourself “Did I just see something blue whizz by?” but before you can answer that, the blue streak goes by again. This time, you get lucky and the bluebird–a male, and a Dad, no less–lights upon a tree branch for a quick break from the action.

Dad is raising his babies, you see, and the babies are always hungry. Not hungry now and then or at mealtimes, but all the time. To a baby bluebird, right this very moment is a mealtime. And it is up to Mom and Dad to provide those meals.

The male bluebird is an excellent hunter, flying near to ground to snatch an unwary insect from mid-flight. Quick as a wink he heads back to the nest, which immediately comes alive with the anticipation of the next meal. The insect successfully delivered, he heads back out for the next one. Again, and again, and again, and, well, again. Now and then he might catch sight of his mate as she, too, is on meal duty, but it is more of a coincidence than anything else.

And one day, the nest was empty. Dad could finally rest.
