During its heyday, the Albuquerque, New Mexico, rail yards employed a large number of people and the yard, located in the downtown area, always had a hustle and a bustle to it as the trains rolled through. Strategically located, the yard was a vital stop for the steam engines, as they required frequent and difficult service. The rail yard was important to both the city and the railroads, and both prospered.

Time marches on, however, as it always does, and the steam engine gave way to the diesel locomotive. Eventually, the rail yard began to fade into the past, and this once vital hub was eventually abandoned to its own fate. The various shops and areas began to crumble and it seemed, outside of an occasional movie that used this as a setting, that it would fade into oblivion.

However, the city of Albuquerque decided that this was unacceptable and began a massive restoration project. This is the Blacksmith Shop, now restored. The building was cleaned up and fixed up and generally repaired, although it was left empty. Standing in the middle of it, it is easy to imagine that it is sometime in the 1920s, or maybe the 1930s, and the yard is in full swing. Luckily for everyone, the rail yards will live on again!
