Autumn Deer

Kebler Pass, in the Gunnison National Forest of Colorado, is one of my favorite places to look for aspens in the autumn. I spend quite a bit of time there, and am fairly familiar with it. Then again, it is hard not to spend a lot of time there.

I knew of one place that I wanted to investigate this particular fall. I gathered up my gear and headed off into the forest to explore the area a bit further. It was a beautiful autumn morning, and I was in no hurry, so I took my time, drifting quietly through the forest. It wasn’t as if I was attempting to be stealthy, but I also wasn’t making a lot of noise, either. I would move a few feet, then stop, move and stop, over and over. Progress was slow as I was taking it all in when I heard a gentle rustle up in the ferns ahead of me. I stood completely still and waited.

After a moment, a head popped up and there, just before me, was a mule deer. It was fairly startled when it saw me, and when it did, she, too, stood frozen looking at me. We looked at each other for a good long while; slowly, gently and carefully I raised my camera and created this memorable scene. Afterwards, the tableau was broken and we went our own way into the peaceful autumn morning.
