The Virgin River, which flows through Zion National Park in Utah, does not start off as a very impressive river, size-wise. Originating to the north of Zion National Park, the zigs and zags through the park, emerging slightly larger than it entered. However, it’s normally small size belies its power, for when it floods it becomes a raging torrent and able to carve canyons out.

Archangel falls, or rather, Archangel Cascade, is a series of sandstone steps which the river flows over. The falls are not very high, they are beyond extraordinary in their beauty. Cascading and tumbling over the shelves of varying heights and widths, the water seems to playfully dance all the way down. In the background, the high canyon walls reflect the early morning light, adding beauty and majesty to the scene. All in all, this is one of the most stunning sights in the entire park.

Archangel falls requires a permit and a fairly strenuous hike to reach, which is just as well since this system helps preserve its incredible beauty. The Virgin river doesn’t care, though, and it continues to meander through the canyon it carved.
