Leaving Afternoon

The end of the day is always a magical time, and especially so in the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Reserve in New Mexico.

The Bosque del Apache is dedicated to providing a safe winter home for migratory waterfowl, such as Sandhill Cranes, Snow Geese, and all varieties of ducks, among others. Actively managed it provides a safe winter habitat as well as plenty of refuge fields nearby, making it the perfect destination for its winter inhabitants. Perhaps they know this, too, for there is a feeling of peace and serenity there, a place of safety and refuge, a place where time seems to stand still.

Yet, time does go by, and eventually each day must end. This particular day’s end, as the afternoon was leaving and evening entering, was full of rich golden colors and tones; the trees reflecting on the pool also reflected the rich light, and in turn everything reflected the end of an absolutely perfect day.

If you look closely, you’ll see there in the middle a few ducks were also leaving the afternoon. And moments after this scene, darkness descended upon a perfect day.
